Based in Huntsville, Alabama AerobotixAS9100 certified Fanuc robotic integrator and metrology company, has entered into an agreement with Minteq International Inc. to dispense Minteq’s FIREX™ RX-2390 Thermal Protection System (TPS) coating for hypersonic flight hardware. Aerobotix will work directly with Pennsylvania-based Minteq’s pyrogenicity group involved in high-temperature coatings for military and aerospace applications.

Minteq engaged Aerobotix for the company’s expertise in robotically spraying parts and test panels to extremely tight tolerances for uniformity and coverage thickness. Aerobotix also has significant previous experience with majors using the FIREX product.

“Our desire was to help our customers and the US government get hypersonic missiles and aircraft into service as quickly as possible,” said Kent Pfeifer, Aerobotix’s process development manager. “By making a commitment to keep the FIREX RX-2390 fresh on our shelves, we can immediately help major programs by robotically spraying precise panels and even prototype parts for flight testing.”

Aerobotix and Minteq scientists worked together to develop a FIREX RX-2390 recipe and a unique robotic paint dispensing system that is optimized for automation and heavy production. FIREX formulations combine modified epoxy binders with thermally active materials that form cooling gases when exposed to temperatures above 350°F.

Applying TPS coatings requires precise thickness control, even solids distribution and strong layer adhesion for optimum performance. Aerobotix’s custom robotic application process provides all of this, plus the ability to automatically spray paint thickness in various areas of the part, which can reduce weight, build time, and cost.

The Aerobotix installation offers a wide selection of preparation and painting services for hypersonic structuresincluding automated structured light scanning/projecting, automated masking tape application, automated FIREX spraying, automated non-contact terahertz measurement, automated force-controlled sanding, and adaptive robotic coating machining.
